Top the Cartoonist

So you think you’re funny? Let’s find out. Below is a version of my comic that will run in papers and on www.dilbert.com on 12/9/05 (Friday). I left out the dialog for the second and third panels. Your job is to come up with something funnier than what I already submitted to newspapers. You might want to review my earlier post on how to write humor.

Here it is:

It’s too late for me to change what I’ve written. So don’t think I’m tricking you into doing my work (yet).

By the way, I normally write my comics as if they are caption contests. I start drawing them before I know what the characters will say. I begin with a general idea and then I draw the first panel. Next I write the words for that panel. Then I draw the next panel, write the words, etc. until the end. As far as I know, no other cartoonist works this way. I prefer it because when I look at the drawn characters, sometimes their physical appearance suggests what they might say. This comic featuring a character called Sourpuss is a perfect example of that.

Format your entries so it’s easy for everyone to see what you wrote.

Sourpuss: “blah blah blah”

Sourpuss: “blah blah blah”

Now go forth and be hilarious.
