After the posts and comments of the past few days about mob rule, it got me thinking. And I didn’t like it. So I stopped thinking and wrote this post. It goes something like this.
Name some government policy that is supported by 66.7% or more of its citizens and is considered immoral by a majority within that same country.
I couldn’t come up with one. But I assume it exists because otherwise you’d all agree with me that anything supported by 66.7% of the country is “right” by definition, and that mob rule is a wonderful thing.
I expect that if you let the mob decide whether the rich should give all of their money to the poor, even that wouldn’t be approved by 66.7% of the public.
The mob might change a few laws. For example, I can see the mob getting rid of pork in government. They might require more accountability of government officials. But the majority would consider those changes completely “right.”
So what’s wrong with mob rule? (No fair mentioning Iraq. Use your own country as your guide.)
